17 Kids and counting

No we don't have 17 kids! It is a tv show on TLC. Tonight, they were talking about way they make their dollar stretch with 19 people in the family. I quickly got out my note pad and took notes...literally. They do things like make their own laundry soap, buy grocieries at discount stores, shop at thrift stores, grow their own veggies, ect. I have taken note and I will practice some of these. I have no place to grow my own veggies since we live in on post housing. I wish I did, but with 2 kids and 2 dogs, the tiny back yard we have handle us all. I can see the girls picking things before they are ripe and stomping on the plants. I am sure that our dogs would try and eat some things and poop on others. But I can buy groceries at a discount store. We do have to Commisary on post, but it is not as great of a deal as one may think. Shopping at thrift stores is a great idea and one I hope to practice soon. I am also planning on learning how to sew, so I can make a few things. As for making my own laundry soap, I am still out on that. I may try it once and see how much money it saves.
We don't hurt for money in anyway. All of our needs are met, there are just some things we would like to have and save for (college for the girls, big girl beds, stuff for JT's truck, a van for me, future kids). Any way we can cut our cost will help us save so much more.
There are ways to make it work, people do it everyday. It just takes a little thought and creativity.

Sarah - that show is NUTS! I watch it too, they might be the most patient parents ever... I can not even fathom 17 kids, and she has another one on the way...
I love reading your blog and keeping up with you guys, I keep thinking about starting one - but I don't have enough excitement to keep it fun and intriguing :)
Love to your family, I hope to see you in December... Y'all can come play Guitar Hero -- we'll make you a rockstar!! xoxo Katie
