Sweet Dreams and Cigarette Smoke

It has now gotten to be a difficult time here in Alaska. I mean with the sun, and it will only get worse. Right now, the sun sets right about 11:30 pm and rises about 4 am. I don't mind the early rising too much, because it gets me up and moving on the days I am not struggling with nausea. But the night time gets to me. I usually go around and close all the blinds and curtains around 6 pm or so. It is my way of saying to our bodies, "It is time to settle down and get ready to go to bed." Does it work? Um...not really. But I am still optimistic.
The other night I got into bed right around 11 pm. The girls had finally settled down after about an hour of trying to keep them in the bed. JT was asleep. I was getting tired and settled into bed. I was just about to close my eyes when I took a deep breath of cigarette smoke. Did I mention that since we do not have air conditioning, we sleep with our windows open? Normally, it is nice to smell the fresh air, but not smoke from a cigarette. One of our neighbors was out smoking and the wind caught the smoke just right to send it through our second story window. Luckily, it didn't last too long.
One other night, I went to bed much later than I should have, 1 am. I got busy on the internet looking at blogs of craft people. So, I quickly got ready for bed and settled in. Ella shortly after came and got into our bed. She had had a bad dream. I got her settled and closed my eyes. I was on the verge of falling asleep when I heard a blood curdling scream coming from outside (again we had our windows open). It was the kind of scream that you hear in horror movies, not that I watch too many of those, I can be a baby when it comes to movies. JT and I both jumped up and looked out the window. There was a lady standing in the parking lot frozen as she stared at this huge husky. We would have gone out there, but one of our other neighbors was already there to save the day. The dog had escaped from someone's yard and I am sure from the scream that came from this lady, he startled her. With the recent wolf attacks on post and the bear sightings, I am sure she thought it was one of those. The MPs (military police) came out shortly after and picked up the dog.
One morning this week, as the sun was coming up, baby birds in a near by tree started singing. I am sure normally this is a beautiful thing, but not at 4 am when you still have 3 more hours of sleep. So, I got up and shut the window.
Yes, out of all that has happened, baby birds made me finally shut my window.
