50 year old plumbing...

...is not good and it seems no one can fix it.
I have complained about this house before and even living here for the past few months, I can say I still don't like it. Don't get me wrong I am very thankful to have a roof over my head, and I am sure we have more space than some people out there. But it is just old army housing. Anyone who has been in the military knows what I am talking about.
Within the first few days of us living here, I was giving the girls a bath and the tub plumbing started leaking...I mean pouring...water onto the floor in our kitchen. They came out and "fixed" it. Well, after they left, the tub wouldn't drain properly and the drain plug wouldn't stay up. My remedy to the drain plug??? I am so glad you asked. I took my shoe lace from my running shoes, since I am currently not running, and tied it to the faucet while the girls took a bath. I know, ghetto, but it worked. It was just one of those things we were living with and didn't call maintenance out to fix it.
Well, a couple days ago, I was washing dishes and the sink started to fill up with water and pieces of food on both sides. It wouldn't go down. JT calls in a work order. They came out, thankfully, in a timely manner. That doesn't always happen.
The tub apparently has been leaking since they came out and "fixed" it. So, we have water in our ceiling...hopefully, no molding. While they were fixing the tub, they also broke it again. Water came pouring down from the ceiling into the kitchen, again! Long story short (sort of), they fixed both problems.
The plumbing guy apologized for the inconvenience. I told him it was ok, I blame more the house than I do those that work on it. He agreed because the house is more than 50 years old. Did I mention that these houses are scheduled to be condemned in January 2010?
I have always loved old houses because of the charm and character, now I am starting to see that having a cookie cutter new house might not be so bad. This is something to think about when we buy a house.
