As many of you in the Lower 48 may have guessed, it is snowing in Alaska. We had our first snow at the end of October. From what I hear, it was later than normal. It snowed a good 5inches. In the south that would shut the whole town down for days, the schools would be canceled and all the milk and bread would be gone from the stores. Not here. Life goes on as normal, you just wake up a little earlier to shovel snow if it snowed the night before, and you make sure your shoes have really good tread on them. Of course, being a southern girl, I got all excited with our first snow and I bundled up the girls and we headed outside. I am the only one that does not have any snow gear.
It has only snowed a hand full of times here, but it doesn't go anywhere. It keeps one piling on. The roads for the most part aren't too bad (especially if you drive my husbands truck). It is icing in the intersections. And if they haven't plowed the snow on the roads, it is kind of like driving a boat in water. I will have to drive more than I want in this stuff, since JT will be training. I will be the one in the big truck driving really slowly, you may honk, but I won't go any faster.
As far as it being sub-temps, I haven't experienced it and I am not sure we will. The normal temps this time of year in this part is in the 20s. I do know it gets lower and some days it will be -30 degrees. But so far, the winter hasn't been to bad.
I can't really complain about the lack of daylight either. Right now it gets light around 9 am and dark around 4pm. I know we will lose a little more daylight as we get more into December. From what I am told, we will slowly start getting more light in Jan. It sure will be nice when the snow melts and it is daylight all the time.
