Ella is at the point now where she can do most of her work on her own. She really just needs me to read directions to her. She is doing amazingly well. Not because she isn't smart, but because this school year did not go as planned. We didn't plan on me being pregnant and very sick during the first half, AND we didn't plan on JT coming home early from Afghanistan with an injury. Those 2 events pushed school aside for a little while. After January, we picked up the pace and started doing 2 lessons of math, reading, and grammar a day. If she needed some time to digest the new material, we would only do one. But she has handled it well. We are still on schedule to finish the week before the baby is due.
She can read...if she doesn't know the word, I make her sound it out first. (Just let me say that teaching someone to read English and all the rules there are is not very easy.) She is AWESOME at math! She totally gets it. The only thing that gets to her is the very, very basics. Like recognizing letters or numbers. Say, I asked her to write the number 57....she would have a hard time. But if you asked her how many dimes and pennies it took to make 57 cents, she could answer you with out hesitation. I don't know if that is normal or what.
She still doesn't like to read...books that is...but she is starting to realize that there is a whole new world that is opening up to her because she does know how to read. She is reads her menu when we go out to eat. She reads signs on the road. It is pretty awesome to be able to see all that click.
I love that we homeschool. I know it is not for everyone, but for us it works. The kids love it too. If you ask Ella now if she wants to go to "real" school or homeschool, she will say homeschool. I think she likes the freedom and being with her family. We are a very close family, and we are usually always out together.
Since Olivia is "in preschool", she comes and goes as she wants. She is busy learning to recognize her letters and numbers...and jumping, running, tossing toys, building with blocks, trying to distract Sutton. And we read a lot of books. Olivia LOVES books. I have a feeling that she will not sigh really big when I teach her to read.
