I can't remember if I have posted anything about the moose that is in our upright freezer. Well, we have a few hundred pounds of meat...moose meat. Along with that, we have salmon, halibut, rock fish, and some trout. With all that, I don't have to buy meat for a year! JT's friend/fellow soldier got to be one of the lucky ones to go moose hunting on base. He was picked from a lottery. He and JT went out one day and they didn't get anything. JT was not able to shoot, he was just there to help with the moose if they killed one.
Well, on our way to finish up a few Christmas presents, he got a call from Andy saying he got a moose and needed his help. Needless to say, I lost my husband for the rest of the night. He was so excited! JT and 2 other guys helped Andy with the moose. Because there is so much meat on the animal, they divided it up. We have a hefty portion of in in our freezer. After I stocked the shelves, I came inside and declared, "Now that is the way to to live in Alaska." We cooked some steaks the night we got the meat. Moose taste like moose...imagine that. It doesn't taste like any animal I have tasted. It has a very neutral flavor to it. I wanted to taste it plain so I would know how I needed to spice it up. Moose absorbs the flavors you cook it with. The next night we had a roast. I marinated it over night with wine, butter, garlic, and onion and then cooked it in the crock pot. It was AWESOME!!! Moose is also very tender. Since we have to much, I am replacing beef with moose. It is healthier anyways.
Well, there is something about that moose being in our fridge that has my inner pioneer woman coming out. I have started making my own bread, and this summer the girls and I are planting a container vegetable garden. It is pretty satisfying knowing where our food comes from and what is in it.

That's awesome Sarah! You go girl.
There is a blog out there called "pioneer woman" and she lives on a farm/ranch in MT, I think... she posts all sorts of recipes for stuff like that - you may want to check her out.
I on the other hand, am totally overwhelmed by that stuff... I would have been dumbfounded as to what to marinate the moose in. Well done. Sounds delicious!!!
It helps to have a cookbook just for moose! LOL
I have been on the pioneer woman's website a lot lately. I have known about her for awhile now, but just recently really got into her. I am starting to find so many blogs I like to read. I think I like reading them more than I like to write sometimes.
me too girl. It's like a new one every week gets added to my list of reads. :)
