A Litte R&R

We thoroughly enjoyed our time with JT while he was here for his mid-tour leave. It was nice and relaxing. It was good for us to get away for a bit as a family and to reconnect. We spent the rest of the time at our home doing whatever we pleased. He went back fully relaxed and in better spirits.

Here are a just a few of the many pictures from our trip up North....or should I say farther North. If you get a globe out look at it and find Fairbanks. It is pretty far North! Do not look at a map, because maps put Alaska next to Hawaii and just in case, people don't know...that is not where Alaska is. I wouldn't say it if people haven't asked.

We had so much fun in Fairbanks. We loved it. It had a small town feel to it, which is something I miss about home. We got to know our way around within a few hours of driving in Fairbanks. It is just outside of the Arctic Circle. If I had realized how close we were, I would have suggested we drive up there.

Before we went, there was a lot of this.

And this...you know his girls were everywhere he was.

The day we left for Fairbanks, it was pretty foggy. We didn't expect much.

As we came to a straight away, the clouds parted and the sun came out and while "Chariots of Fire" was playing on the ipod (no joke, who has that on their ipod other than my husband?) we got our first glimpse of Mt. McKinley. OK, I can see it from my back porch, but the was waaay closer.

That night, we ate here. It is the northern most brewery in the world. You can get their beers almost anywhere in Alaska.

This is the famous pipeline. JT asked how far it went. I answered, "the whole state". He meant the little walking trail that was next to it. IT, only went a few feet.

These mileage signs were everywhere. Take a look, it is pretty interesting. Each sign you come across has different places.

Look! They are getting ready for a Christmas parade early! No, actually, in North Pole, AK, their light poles look like this all the time.

Santa wasn't at his house that day, so we got to take pictures in his chair.

And leave a letter.

JT took the girls on a sled dog trip ;)

We stopped for a couple hours at a place called Pioneer Park. It has all your tourist stuff, but if also has several playgrounds. We let the kids play at the park for awhile. I am thankful I got this cute picture. The next picture was Ella "yawning" pretending she was board. I don't know how she ever got that image in her head...it wasn't from me.

On our way back down to the Denali. We thought our gas mileage was pretty awesome. You gotta love some mountain driving! At least, going down the mountain. And yes, that is 57 miles to the gallon.

We didn't enjoy the Denali park as much as we thought we would. If you live in Alaska, you see more wildlife every day on the highway and around the neighbor hoods. We weren't able to see Mt. McKinley or the tops of any mountain, because it rained the whole time. If you are coming to Alaska, it is something to see, but just know that you are not guaranteed to see anything. I think there are also better places to hike. If you are going to do the Denali, get a pass to back pack on your own, but please make sure you know what you are doing first.

We got out for a minute...and I mean minute...at Savage River. It was cold and VERY windy.

But it is till pretty, even from the car.

It's all so breath taking! Crazy that you're only a hop, skip, and a jump away from all that beauty. Hard to imagine especially when I'm still sitting in Memphis. :) Thanks for sharing, and as always LOVE the photos.

Oh, I dont think I've seen JT's tat on his arm before... what is it of?

That one is a fish splashing in the water. He has an eagle on his back and one day he wants to get them incorporated. The guy that did his fish tatoo had some pretty awesome ideas. He also has a cross on his other arm.
