Fur Rondy: The World's Best Winter Festival

Despite our ER trip, we did have some fun this weekend!

The Fur Rendezvous is the week before the Iditarod.  As I understand it, the trappers would gather and hold an auction for the fur of animals.  Before you think this is barbaric,  Alaska has a large native population that live off the land and still do.  Trust me, the majority of animals here that are hunted have every part of that animal used.
Anyways, they would trade the fur....or something like that.  JT won a lynx pelt!  It is cool.  It smells...bad...like a man with a lot of musky cologne who ran a marathon and didn't take a bath for a couple of days, but just reapplied that musky cologne.  If you ever smell that, run away or get your gun, cause there is a lynx near you.

Just an example of some of the pelts.

Isn't she a beauty?  I love her eyes!

But during the festival they have all sorts of things going on downtown and around town all week long.
There is a carnival.

There are dog sled races (not the Iditarod).  And there were dog sled rides, but we missed those.

The blanket toss is an Alaskan Native tradition.  This blanket is made of either whale or seal.  I love the expressions of the people's faces!

Look!  They even had Arctic Ponies! ;)

Our cheeks and noses were all turning rosie...my toes were numb.  No, I did not have flip flops on...I am not crazy!  I did see people in shorts....they were crazy!

So, we warmed ourselves with some hot chocolate and coffee.
I love this photo!  JT was trying to keep it together while Sutton was trying to make him laugh.  I should have lowered my camera slightly to catch Sutton's face in JT's glasses.  Oh well, I had a baby in my lap.

After we warmed ourselves, we headed to the out house races.  I have no clue how this got started!  But it is funny reading all the names on the out houses.

"Poo Poo Pee Doo", "Skid Mark"....and the list goes on.

The girls were bundled up with layer after layer.  This year, we didn't hear any one say they were cold.  It is nice when there is no complaining!

Even Bigfoot made an appearance...he did so, because he knew he would blend in with all the other people covered in fur.

Later this week there will be a native arts market.  I hope to go down there.
This place is so fun!  I could have spent my whole day down there just observing!
